The big guy, the one that always had an opinion or jumped on either side of a disagreement, Davisburg Rotarian and decorated retired Navy Master Chief, Allen P. Schofer passed away following an illness.

Adults will know and remember him for his presence at just about all community events in the Hamlet of Davisburg.  The Davisburg Rotary, the place he ate his supper every Wednesday night-provided it was something this picky eater would eat-will remember him for all of his volunteering for anything that stood for Rotary or would be of help to someone.  What happened when the weekly Rotary meal was something Schofer didn't care for? The cook always made sure to have peanut butter and jelly on hand to appease his appetite.

Al was also well known and well thought of throughout Rotary District 6380 where he served a number of clubs and several District Governors as an Assistant District Governor.  Al also participated in the Club Vision Facilitation processes as well as was a prominent figure as Sergeant-at-Arms at many District Conferences.

A Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow, Al Schofer also received a high honor for his efforts on behalf of Boy Scouts throughout the country.  Always a proponent of the local Davisburg Troop, 192.   Al stuffed many a hotdog into buns along the way to helping fund raise for the Scouts.

Al Schofer will be missed not only by the kids-now young men-that he helped guide through their younger years, but the adults that counted on him to be there for the bake sale, garage sale, auction, or anything else that would help others.

Davisburg Rotary, District 6380, the Boy Scouts and others will honor Schofer October 27 at the 4-H Fairgrounds Youth Activity Building in Davisburg, late afternoon/evening of that day.

A church memorial service will be held October 13 at the First Presbyterian Church in Flint at 10 a.m. Burial will follow Monday, 2:30 p.m. October 15 at the Great Lakes Veterans Cemetery, just north of Holly, MI.

On Saturday afternoon, October 27, 2012 at 3:30 p.m., Davisburg Rotary Club will be hosting a Memorial to Allen Schofer at the Davisburg United Methodist Church's Gospel Center located at 803 Broadway, Davisburg, Michigan.  Gathering & Formal Welcome is at 3:30, a light dinner will be served at 4 p.m. and the Tribute to Allen P. Schofer will follow.

The church's Gospel Center is the largest facility available to us, space is limited so an RSVP is a must.  RSVP to Michael Wise at mike@lopezengineers.com or phone 248-634-0444.  We need those reservations by Sunday, October 20.

Written tributes may be sent electronically to Gerry Jackson at geraldwjackson@gmail.com.  Tributes will be read that the service and Gerry is collecting the tributes for a book honoring Al.  Please also send any photographs you may have of AL at the various clubs and functions throughout the district.  Those photos are being placed into a memorial to be projected during the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Davisburg Rotary, P.O. Box 96, Davisburg, Michigan 48350.  Those memorials will be used to supplement funds for a youth scholarship in Al's name.
