Bumpeh Chiefdom: Growing a Community’s Future
The Ann Arbor Rotary Club invites Rotarians in our District
to work together to help change the future for Bumpeh Chiefdom

Dear Rotarian Mary,

We are raising support now for a second high-impact Global Grant (Click for Summary GG1980574) to benefit Bumpeh Chiefdom. A visionary chief, Charles Caulker, has developed a clear path for changing lives. He started the Center for Community Transformation and Empowerment (CCET) to help him realize his dreams to educate children and to move his people from subsistence to self reliance.

With Ann Arbor Rotary Club serving as the project lead on our first high-impact Global Grant; Freetown Rotary Club serving as the international host; participation from Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor North, Cincinnati, Dexter, Wilmington, NC and Pune Central Clubs; and with Sherbro Foundation as a cooperating partner, great strides have been made.

  • Two “Education Orchards" have been planted to fund education long term
  • Women have been given bags of peanut seed to plant as a way to support their families
  • Children’s births have been recorded giving them access to government services
  • Forest reserves were created to protect village water sources and preserve trees.

Now, with a second Global Grant, we plan to solidify the strides that have been made

  • Plant a third "Education Orchard" and maintain the existing orchards
  • Hire an experienced Agriculture Manager to manage the program and market crops
  • Dig two wells with pumps and storage tanks; and build a storehouse and a concrete drying floor
  • Expand the peanut-growing project to more eager women and help them increase their income.
  • Plant and manage a fourth "Orchard for Medical Care" to pay for services provided to villagers at Rotifunk Hospital (a collaboration with Wilmington NC Rotary Club)
Join the Grant

Impact and Sustainability
Once the orchards start bearing fruit they will generate revenue to educate the children of Bumpeh chiefdom for years to come. By 2023 it's conservatively estimated that the orchards will generate $50,000 a year.
