On November 4 and 5 the Rotary Club of Clarkston will again be
seen on the streets and stores of Clarkston “selling” their Clarkston Rotary
newspaper, which describes the activities of their club over the past year.
All the proceeds from the sale will then be spent on shoes, boots, hats and
gloves for local children. The club has focused on the newspaper/shoes
program for the past 43 years having benefitted more than 11,500
Clarkston children. This community service program is only made possible
with the assistance of so many service-minded volunteers, as well other
community organizations involved during the days of activities in early
November. The efforts, time and energy provided by so many people
participating is truly appreciated.

Clarkston Rotarians, friends of Rotary, Clarkston Area Lions,
Clarkston Optimists, Calvary Lutheran Church, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
and other groups are all part of the 400 volunteers who contribute over
2,000 hours to bring both the newspaper sales for donations and “Shoes
for Kids” to fruition. The Clarkston Community School Social Workers, teachers and Clarkston Lighthouse staff work to help determine children in need of a little
extra assistance.

Calvary Lutheran Church is graciously providing support for the second year through the use of their church and expansive layout on the
day of Shoes. The Clarkston Lions will offer their Project KidSight, a free eye examination available to the entire family. The Clarkston Area Optimist Club and their school-based clubs join in with their Opti-Socks program providing new socks to go along with their new shoes. The Clarkston Elementary Schools and local churches assist with their new hat and glove donation tree programs. Local dental offices help by donating toothbrushes and toothpaste to promote dental health.

The Rotary Club of Clarkston “Shoes for Kids” program would not be possible without the generosity shown by the community donations and the volunteers during our club’s annual two day “Goodfellow” newspaper sales. 100% of the weekend donations go directly to providing Clarkston area school children with new winter boots, shoes, hats, and mittens or gloves.

A special thanks to Neiman’s Family Market, Woodshop, Hamlin Pub, Brioni’s and Tim Horton’s for their continued support over the years in providing for a wide variety of foods for the many volunteers.
Gott’s Auto has provided the use of a truck and trailer in order to move a lot of shoes and boots for the event. This Rotary special edition newspaper is published due to the continued support provided by the View Newspaper Group, the Clarkston
News and assistant publisher Don Rush and Clarkston Rotarian Mary Sloan.

The “Shoes for Kids” program is truly a collaborative community effort. Every person donating, every service group participating, and community volunteers taking time out of their lives are all integral in helping to protect our most valuable resource – the children of our future.
